Ribadesella traditionally
has been the shopping centre of the area. In the town there
are two streets that contain most of the shops, the Gran Via
and Comercio street. In this area are the most modern shops
and businesses. For example coffee shop, bars, chemists, clothes
shops and news agents.

In the
old town, The long street, running from Atalaya to El Portiellu
had many shops including lots of bars, sidrerias, restaurants
and gift stores. Also a traditional street market held here
every Wednesday that dates back to the 13th century. This area
has more of a taste of the old times and more character.

| Paseo Marítimo
del Puerto. |
The third commercial area
is located in the promenade at the port. Dedicated today to
the Princess of Asturias, Dª Leticia Ortiz, who has strong
ties to this borough. In the old times, all the buildings stored
coal and equipment for the boats. But now it is a modern and
attractive area where there are tapas bars, activity centres
specializing in canoeing, horse riding, hiking, caving, quad
bikes etc, as well as gift shops and a tourist office open all
year round. The last area of shopping is in El Picu. Because
there is a large population here, overall during the summer
months, in this area, it is necessary for pharmacies, supermarkets,
news agents, coffee shops and restaurants.

More recently, the most important
handcrafts manufactured in Ribadesella are the wooden canoes
that are built by the Cuesta brothers. The canoes used to be
made from wood, but are now made from fibre glass, which is
stronger and more resistant. Before there were many boat builders,
but now this art has almost disappeared. The local artisans
now make pottery for tourists, many objects like small model
hórreos, vases, games, also made out of pottery and funny
little goblins called Guruxos. In closing we have to mention
the clothing; waist coats beautifully embroidered on the backs,
for the Piragües, the canoe fiesta. .
